Larry Potts is hosting a brand new “Songwriter Spotlight”, evening at the Aqus Cafe, starting next Wednesday night, March 10, 7pm.  No cover.

This showcase will bring in known songwriters from both the local scene and from elsewhere in the Bay Area and beyond.

Next Wednesday night will feature two artists: first, Javier Montiel, a Petaluma-based songwriter who has one short album release called “Little One”.  Larry describes Javier’s music as contemporary, groovy, quirky, jazzy, and definitely cool. It’s inventive songwriting, with offbeat lyrics.  Javier will open the evening.

Next featured artist will be Oakland-based award-winning singer songwriter Steve Meckfessel, whose music is described as Jazz-Infused Urban Folk.  He has two albums out, “Twice” and “Under Beautiful Skies.”

Steve is the winner of the 2007 Sisters folk Festival Dave Carter Memorial Song Contest, and he’s had credits in the hit TV series JAG.
Keith Greninger’s review:  “Steve’s impact as an artist combines a triple threat of fluid guitar, plain, rich, unforced melodies, and a deep natural human insight.”

Also — get out your date books right this minute!  And jot in “An intimate evening with D’Bunchovous”  on Saturday March 20th at 7PM at the Petaluma Arts Center (at the corner of Lakeville and East Washington).  Doors open at 6:30 — and tickets are $15 in advance, and $18 at the door.  For advance tickets, call Peg Grubb 707-486-2108.

I reviewed the Petaluma Arts Center as a venue after the recent Larry Potts show (which was really enjoyable) — listen, it’s a comfortable and really good sounding room.  How often does an “Arts Center” actually come thru with the goods and deliver anything resembling “art”?

Well in this case, it is a happening venue, and I’m recommending it highly as a cool place to hear music.  Easy parking too — so no worries there.

And the band?  These guys are beyond good — they’re into that special territory where music is magic — where real emotions, real insights, real artistry occurs.  I’ll figure out a way to get you a MP3 clip of a tune or two as a link from this blog — and you’ll see what I mean — they perform lots of original material that showcases their musicianship, but they’re also happy to throw in a Beatle tune too.

And most importantly to me, they actually have FUN!  (And that makes for a nice night out for you….)

Like I said, write it down!
