In a few short months, almost 40 kids at Petaluma Junior High have formed 6 bands, have argued about band names, learned to start, play and end songs together while striking rock star poses – and have in general become a credit to the world of Rock & Roll!

And after a semester of rehearsals, these kids are taking it to the big stage at the Phoenix Theater in downtown Petaluma — the show is an early one (hey this is a school night!) starting at 7:00 PM on Tuesday May 11th – ending by 8:00 PM.

It’s free – but donations to the music program are cheerfully accepted.

Really, if you could use a lift, and want to see how vibrantly creative and absolutely cute kids can be, this show is for you.

I really must mention the extraordinary contribution that the Jr. High’s Music Director, Preston Bailey, makes to R&R 101 – he IS the program, and contributes his expertise and care for these young musicians on his own time after school on Fridays when everyone else has headed for home and a cold one.

I’m a participant and supporter of the program, along with teacher and mighty fine bass player Bob Herman, and guitar teacher and performer Gary Vogensen.  A number of pro musicians have dropped in to offer support, along with Charley from Tall Toad and the Phoenix Theaters’ own fearless leader Tom Gaffey.

Then, Wednesday evening, May 12th, at 7:00 PM, Zone Music hosts a free performance workshop for musicians and music lovers – “Got Groove?” with guitarist Gary Vogensen, and rhythm section Ben Burliegh on bass and Aaron Haggerty on drums.

This workshop is part of a series – Wednesday Night Live – at Zone Music – in which professional working musicians, vocal coaches, performance coaches, and music teachers present and demonstrate the tools and tricks of the trade.

Gary, Ben and Aaron will pull back the curtain and provide musicians with the techniques that pro musicians use to get a groove on!

If you are in a band, don’t miss this evening!  Or even if you are a solo or duo performer who wants to learn how to add that deep groove to your playing, you’re invited to attend this free workshop/performance – guaranteed to turn you on!

See you there!
